Calendula / Pot Marigold

Calendula is a cheery, dependable bloomer in the garden. It is one of the most versatile herbs with uses in cosmetic and culinary recipes, medicinal preparations, dyes and long-lasting fresh and dried bouquets.

Zones 6 – 10. Best in sun but some shade is tolerated. Average garden soil with good drainage. Cannot tolerate water-logged soil. Pinch away old blooms far continuous flowering. Annual, height, 1 – 2 feet, branched, succulent stem with fine leaves with hairy base. Flowers in summer, golden yellow to orange flowers 2 – 3 inches across. Usually free from pest and diseases. Dry petals in shade on paper to prevent sticking; store in moisture proof jars. Preserve whole flowers in salad vinegar. Dried, ground calendula flowers can be used as a substitute for saffron. Calendula oil has antiseptic properties. It’s made from the brightest orange petals which have the highest concentration of active ingredients.
