Epazote

Annual, full sun many culinary and medicinal uses. Ingredient in Mexican chili sauces. Easy to grow.

Height 4 – 6 feet. This herb is commonly used in Mexican cooking. Grows wild in Mexico and has become naturalized in parts of the South. Prefers a warm sunny location and medium to dry soil, but will grow just about anywhere. Epazote grows tall and lanky. Don’t fertilize this herb unless the soil is very poor. Too much nitrogen results in abundant leaf production but diminished flavor. If the lover leaves begin to turn yellow, use half=strength fertilizer. This plants readily self-sows, so it is important to cut off the seed heads when the develop in the fall. One this plant becomes established, it ca be difficult to eradicate. When the plant grows to 18 inches, begin harvesting. Cut the tall center stem first to encourage the side branches to grow. Don’t harvest more than half the plant at a time.
