Garlic Chives
(Allium tuberosum)

Perennial, Height 8" to 10". Garlic chives are sometimes known as Chinese leeks or Oriental chives. They combine the flavor of garlic and onions and are very aromatic when cut. They have gained popularity in recent years and should be grown if space allows. This herb is very much like traditional chives in its habits. Handle garlic chives exactly as you would other chives in all respects. There are several differences, though, that makes garlic chives more useful for the commercial grower. The blades are flat and heavier than those of chives. The clumps have a tighter growth habit, which makes it more difficult for grasses and weeds to grow with them. Garlic chives multiply faster and can be divided sooner than regular chives. The ability to increase the number of stock plants rapidly is a benefit. When cut, the blades grow back faster and more uniformly than do those of regular chives. There is also less tip die back after being cut. The flowers are white, fragrant, edible and of the umbel type. Do no allow the flowers to go to seed or you’ll have new plants springing up everywhere.
